Gail Pacheco

Gail’s career reflects a deep commitment to economics that makes a difference. From her
early life in Kuwait, through experiences in the UK and India, to her academic journey here
in New Zealand, she has brought curiosity, compassion, and a determination to use
economics to improve lives—especially for those most marginalised.

Her contributions to the NZAE are exceptional. Gail has served 16 years on Council—the
longest of anyone in our history—including as Vice President, President, and Immediate Past
President. She has chaired or contributed to nearly every committee, led numerous
conferences, modernised our communications, and was the first woman to serve as Editor-in-
Chief of New Zealand Economic Papers.

Beyond the Association, Gail’s impact on the profession has been equally profound. She has
led major public-good research projects, built national capability in microdata analysis, and
held influential public roles including as a Productivity Commissioner and now as Equal
Employment Opportunities Commissioner at the Human Rights Commission.

She is a dedicated teacher, mentor, and communicator—regularly engaging with the public to
make economics more accessible and relevant.

Gail, your tireless service, leadership, and integrity have enriched our Association and the
profession. It is with great respect and admiration that we award you Life Membership of the
NZAE. Congratulations.
